SCRAPPIN' IDOL LAYOUTS

It was a short but sweet ride.

With much regret and sadness, circumstances have forced me to withdraw from the ongoing Scrappin' Idols 2009 Contest sponsored by ScrappinMoms. So much had happened, is happening and will happen over the next months in my professional career that led me to decide not to continue. The last straw, if you want to know, is when I found out that I will not be able to attend the August 29 Finale. Sad, deeply sad. I have been feeling down and depressed, yes, but I know I should be thankful for the opportunities that come my way.

To everyone, thanks so much for the support and the understanding. Thanks to ScrappinMoms' for the challenges, I enjoyed the ride so much. To my co-participants, the mere fact that you jumped head-on means that you know within yourselves that you have what it takes to be a Scrappin' Idol and for that, I salute you. Good luck, girls. ;o)

So, here are my layouts and the stories behind them:

ELIMINATION ROUND - INSPIRATION SERIES

The challenge is based on this ad:

I remember I did this one Wednesday night (deadline was Thursday afternoon). I originally did not want to join, but the love for challenge (and my fear of Pia getting mad at me!!! LOL) prevailed - - so I still submitted.

Published at Scrapstreet.com Magazine's November 2009 Issue.

For this layout, I thought of the contest theme for this year (Going Back to Basics) and let my dear daughter's pictures do the talking LOL. I flipped the Coke Ad and lifted the red background and the orientation/placement of the round photos. I am soo in love with my newest babies - - my soft pastels - - and I used them on my doodled red background (they're as versatile as paints and watercolors!!!) I cut circles out of my papers and placed buttons here and there for my circle elements. I also got to play with my colored wire and used it to string my chipboard alphas and my pearl beads.

Journaling: You're my kind of girl.

Supplies: Cardstock: Die Cuts with a View, Papers: JillyBean Soup, Chipboards: Cosmo Cricket, All About Scrapbooking, Buttons: Basic Grey, Scenic Route, Sticker: Scenic Route, Paint: Making Memories, Pens: Sakura, Uniball Signo, Others: Pearl beads, colored wire, soft pastels.

ROUND 1: PIECES OF YOU

The challenge was about paper piecing. This is the most memorable round for me for it was my birthday week. I was out celebrating every night the entire week - - so I was able to make this one Thursday morning, with a major case of hangover. LOL. This was my first (and last kaya? LOL) 8.5"x11" LO. Submitted it with 10am stamp on my email - - muntik pang di umabot. LOL. I was so prepared to be eliminated after this Round, but hey, I got lucky.

I used here my Making Memories stamps which have been neglected for the longest time. I used paper piecing on the stamped images and layered the cutout papers to add dimension. Apart from the paper piecing, I also used misting, layering, distressing, handcutting
and tearing techniques in page.

Journaling:
"Mommy, can I have a kiss?"
"Come here, anak."
And Mommy gave Nat a kiss.

Materials: Bazzill cardstock, JB sticker, Making Memories tiny alphas, shimmer, pps and stamps, AAS conchos, Stazon and Ranger Inks, pen, corrugated board.

ROUND 2: REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE

The challenge for this round is to apply the 3Rs in your layout.

Reduce: I have bought this Scenic Route Appleton Patterned paper months ago with the "one pattern paper challenge" in mind. Lucky eh?

Reuse: I used my Maya Road circle sheer as a layer and as a pattern/template in doing my own Hambly transparency LOL (note that the pattern/background was painted on a recycled pp plastic).

Recycle: Aside from the recycled pp plastic, I used my Making Memories stamp folder packaging as an arrow diecut. To make it more interesting and to add dimension, I coiled a crochet yarn around it.

Supplies: Border Punch: Fiskars (Threading Water), Cardstock: Die Cuts with a View, Paper: Scenic Route, Foam Alphas: American Crafts (Thickers), Stickers: Adorn It, Embellishments: Maya Road Sheer, Heidi Grace chipboards, Paints: Making Memories, Stamp: My Favorite Things, Journaling pen: Uniball Signo, Ink: Colorbox, Others: Making Memories stamp folder packaging, patterned paper plastic package, crochet yarn, Quickutz foam alphabet diecuts (Moxxie).

Journaling:
Climb up, young man
There's nothing to fear
You have the world in your hands
You can be
Whatever you want to be
I have no doubt in you, son.

ROUND 4: SPACE IT OUT! CELEBRATE THE EVERYDAY!

Negative space with 8 photos with the theme "Everyday":

I chose the theme “Where You Work”. When I prepared my photos, I didn’t really think yet of my page design. I was more into the quality as this is my first time to scrap artistic shots of inanimate objects. I just printed them in varying small sizes and in combination of colored and black and white (with the objective of the latter taming the colors on my page). I arranged them all in one side, embellishments and photos alike, in order to gather my white space on the other side. I considered color symmetry and chose the papers and embellishments that will bring the most out of my photos.

Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Papers: Sassafras Lass, Teresa Collins, Stickers: October Afternoon, Rub-ons and felt shapes: American Crafts, Fontwers, Sheer Journal: Maya Road, Buttons: BasicGrey, Chipboards: A2zScraplets, Heidi Swapp, Ink: Colorbox, StazOn, Pen: Uniball Signo, American Crafts, Others: Dymo tape, acetate, Cuttlebug diecuts (arrows, netting and @), acrylic paints.

So there. What's next for me? I haven't really studied - - as in REALLY studied - - in the last five years, so now I have to reawaken my inner geeky, nerdy self. Just wish me luck, I'll be needing tons (like SUPER TONS) of it!!!

Thanks guys.

Oh, how sad! Ako nga kahit "saling cat" lang nagi-enjoy to the max! Actually, mas enjoy nga ako dahil "no pressure" at "NEVER" ako mai-eliminate! How cool is that?

Are you going back to school?

Well, whatever your reasons are...Goodluck, Girl!

Hugs,
Ate Lil

Janis this is so sad. I look forward seeing your layouts in the gallery pa naman every week. Hay istorbo talaga ang work sa scrapping career natin. Hehe. But seriously, you're on of the strong contenders sa SMI 3. Hopefully next year makasali ka ulit.

Sad naman you had to withdraw... nagulat ako kahapon wala kang LO sa gallery...eh di ba usually tabi yung LOs natin kase Thursday tayo nagsa-submit? hehe...

Anyway, I wish you good luck on your professional career...isipin mo na lang higher market value, more scrapping budget.. *wink*
